A Changing
As you can tell, Getting Started in Emergency Preparedness is changing, just a bit. One of the changes has already happened. Another change is happening right now.

Maybe ; - )

Thinking
I wrote a book, Prepper: Surviving the Tough Times Ahead. The problem with most books; there is no video, .pdf, or ... Plus, surviving isn't easy. You need a lot more information.

Competition
I'm a competitive kind'a person. I like to be the best or close to the best, that a slacker can be ; - )

Well, ... Sometimes folks are stronger, smarter, or ... just plain lucky, depending on the situation, and they win the race.

Needless to say, when it comes to prepping, I could care less who's advice you follow, as long as you and your family are getting ready.

P.S.
Buy my e-book Prepper: Surviving the Tough Times Ahead. If you can't afford it, read 16 Weeks

Training, Training, and More Training
There is a lot to read in the next few articles, and I need for you to read them all for a couple of reasons.

First, I want you to understand that there is a military-industrial complex, and there are people that will take advantage of our soldiers, sailors, marines, and airman, to make a buck, in every country.

Second, I want you to understand your children and partner need training (so do you) with your weapons and other equipment because the villains are going to attack when they are ready, not you.

Lastly, I want you to understand there is a balance between supplies and training.

How Much is Enough?
My family and I have reached a point in our preps where we're starting to think about caches at each of my brother's home. The idea is to stock a limited amount of long-term food storage, about three to six months, for each family. The idea is to purchase long grain white rice and a variety of beans and self-pack

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,

source

Last month, I talked to y'all about selecting firearms for your family to use during an event.

Well, ... Some of y'all don't have a gun range that will let your family rent firearms for comparison or you live under an oppressive regime like Colorado, California, or ...

Revolvers and Pistols
As you know, I suggest a .357 magnum revolver for your family because of it's affordability and its need for minimal equipment to be effective for your family (no expensive magazines)

But, ... Some of y'all have a little more money

Link:
YouTube: TheYankeeMarshal - Revolver vs. Semi-auto for Concealed Carry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv-HopvElfc

Glock, M&P, and XD
There are many 9mm pistols out there. The three most popular polymer pistols (maybe not the XD ; - ) are from Glock, Smith and Wesson, and Springfield Armory.

Not really, there are many others, as you saw in the first video ; - )

Link:
YouTube: Miculek.com - Glock vs M&P vs XD comparison with world champion shooter, Jerry Miculek
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clZnXL7nlFo

.45 ACP
Some of y'all consider the 9mm a 'baby' cartridge, so you want something a little bigger like the .45 ACP.

Link:
YouTube: hickok45 - Glock vs 1911
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly5UnR7pPtk

Bolt Action or Semi-Automatic Rifle
I suggest the SKS rifle for most preppers. It's an inexpensive rifle that requires minimal equipment, like the .357 magnum revolver, to be effective.

But, ... Some preppers have even less money, so they may be thinking about a bolt-action rifle for their preppers such as the Mosin–Nagant, K98, Lee-Enfield, and some others.

Link:
YouTube: DocTacDad - Bolt Action vs Semi Auto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOvc3DNkRnE

The Other Semi-Automatic Rifles
Of course, with many military veterans in our society, they will find the other semi-automatic rifles to be better suited to their situation.

Link:
YouTube: hickok45 - AK47 vs AR15

Shotguns
There are many others shotguns for you and your family to consider for your preps.

But, ... The most popular are the ...

Plus, ...

Since you're probably not going to be running around in the woods, trying to defeat the forces of the New World Order, the local charity stores will have fleece jackets and many other outdoor clothing in brighter, but still very warm, colors.

Bushcraft Shelters

Swimming Pools
Most preppers look at their family's pool as a source for drinking water during an event.

Too bad. Pools, and waterbeds, use toxic chemicals to keep the pool water clear, toxic chemicals that could harm you and your family.

But, but, but, ... I drink it all the time!

No, not really, you or a family member probably just swallowed a little bit the last time you went swimming. No enough to make you sick or harm you.

Link:
Preparedness Advice - Is Swimming Pool Water Safe to Drink?
http://preparednessadvice.com/water_purification/is-swimming-pool-water-safe-to-drink/

Distill It
Needless to say, a swimming pool can hold a lot of water that would be hard to pass up during an event.

So, ... you and your family could probably distill the swimming pool water, for drinking.

Notice:
I said probably. I have distilled water, but never from a pool.

Ms. Hisrich is an awesome teacher to have done this demonstration for her students.

However, ... She made a mistake. Ms. Hisrich should have let the water settle because there were too many solids in the water. Letting the water 'settle' would have allowed 'clear' water to form for her to successfully used the LifeStraw.

Stanley Karnow’s, Vietnam, A History

Old Men
Many years ago, about the time I was born, a small conflict started. It was called World War Two. During that conflict, some promises where made by the French to the Vietnamese.

The promise: Fight the Japanese with us, and we will leave the country, at the end of the war. (According to family)

Needless to say, the French reneged on their promise and we got the First Indochina War. A few years latter, these United States became involved with the conflict; a little action, we call the Vietnam War.

During that conflict, the Vietcong would give old rifles to old men. These old men were told 'Here are five unfired cartridges. When we return, we want five fired cartridge cases.' The old men knew their families would be punished, if they disobeyed. (According to family, of course)

Why?

The five shots would cause these United States combat forces to deploy to the sound of the shooting, at least. At worst, a Soldier or Marine would be injured or be killed.

Why?

To remind you, old men with old rifles can kill you just as dead as young men with new rifles.

I don't have anything more to say : - (

But, ... Dr. Joe St. Sauver does

Firearm's Safety

Link:
University of Oregon: Joe St. Sauver, Ph.D. - Firearm's Safety
http://pages.uoregon.edu/joe/firearms-safety.html

Cybercrime
The first link, not including "Firearm's Safety," is for the professional computer folks. It talks about checking your servers and other things. (Jumper and Scout, my brothers, would understand the whole paper. I don't).

Needless to say, I would be linking to it, unless there were one or two useful things for preppers.

P.S. They're at the very beginning, all in 'Part: One'

University of Oregon: Joe St. Sauver, Ph.D. - New Crypto 101
https://www.stsauver.com/joe/new-crypto-101/new-crypto-101.pdf

The next link, from 2011, deals with a discussion of the various types of cybercrime. Something you and your family need to know.

University of Oregon: Joe St. Sauver, Ph.D. - The 2011 “Tour of Cyber Crimes”
https://www.stsauver.com/~joe/cybercrime2011/cybercrime2011.pdf

The next article, Dr. St. Sauver writes about the need for passwords, how to select a 'strong' password, and how to manage your passwords.

University of Oregon: Joe St. Sauver, Ph.D. - "Those Dang Passwords: They're Just Driving Me Crazy!"
https://www.stsauver.com/~joe/password-oregonian/password-oregonian.pdf

Privacy
As we enter an era of government (Big Brother) and commercial (Little Brother) intrusion into our affairs, we will want more and more privacy from these groups.

But, ... How do you get it?

University of Oregon: Joe St. Sauver, Ph.D. - We Regret To Inform You That "Due to Insecurities Beyond Our Control, Your Privacy Has Been Cancelled For Your Convenience"
https://www.stsauver.com/~joe/pacificinstitute/astoria.pdf

P.S.
If you think you're a 'Good Guy' and have nothing to hide, you're just like me, a few months ago.

Because, I have thought about this. What happens "If' the National Socialists (Nazis) came to power, in the next election?

Do you own firearms, buy ammunition, magazines, holsters, firearm's cleaning supplies, and other gear, over the internet? Using a credit card?

Do you read Ann Coulter, Lew Rockwell, Claire Wolf, Derrick Wilburn, and many others on-line?

Oh, ... Let's not forget if you're a Homosexual, Abortion Advocate, Women's Rights Advocate, Jehovah's Witnesses, and many, many others.

Electromagnetic Pulse
There are few events that would devastate our country. One of these is an Electromagnetic Pulse attack, something that becomes more and more available to potential enemies.

Around the world, people collect water in various ways then some of these folks will walk miles back to their homes. They do this everyday.

Public Broadcasting Service - How Hard can it be to Carry Water?

Wow
I believe a family can easily store enough water for 30 days using 55 gallon barrels.

Note:
I would change the design, just a little. First, I would use shorter carriage bolts or insure the bolt ends are away from the barrels. Don't want the barrel to be pierced by the bolt end : - (

Second, I would install shutoff valves on all the barrels, just in case the bottom barrl leaks.

Third, I won't store flammable liquids or gases with my family's supplies.

Does "It" Work?
One of the problems with prepping and survivalism is the widespread use of fiction to tell a convincing story that is basically lies; like Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse; Alas, Babylon; and many others

Even though they are excellent stories, some folks believe they are technical manuals that will help them survive. Hardly.

I admit it; the two most popular firearms for preppers and survivalists are the Glock pistol and the AR-15 series rifle because no one takes the suggestion to save money by purchasing a .357 magnum revolver and a SKS rifle.

A 'Nice' Idea
You have heard me say this a couple of time, if you have been here a little while, magazines are a weakness of pistols.

Because of this weakness, you're going to buying a lot of them. Remember, at least five for the pistol (ten would be better) and 10 for the rifle (20 would be better).

Just Not for Water
There is much to like about this article.

Except for, ...

Do Not, Don't, Never apply WD-40 or hairspray to a plastic bottle (storage container) that you plan to store water, food, or other items; you and your family are going eat or drink.

Why?

The WD-40 will go through the plastic contaminating your food.

In other words, it's like storing your food in a used oil bucket.

It's called penetrating oil for a reason!

Excuses
As you know, one of my brothers has been outed as a prepper, so folks ask him all the time for advice. Being a 'nice' guy, he gives it.

Usually, his advice is 'store water, buy food (a year supply for everyone in the family), get a medical kit with some training, have a firearm with more than twenty rounds of ammunition, and ... other items discussed in Prepper: Surviving the Tough Times Ahead. (Barnes and Nobles) (Smashwords)

Well, ... They don't do it.

The Beginning
Some folks are wishing the economic collapse would hurry up and get here (It's already here; some folks just don't know it), so they can put their prepping plans into action.

Needless to say (families already experiencing the collapse know this) money is going to be a problem, so you and your family are going to be out hustling for work, food, and other necessities to survive.

One way to do this is to start a small business.

Well, ... You're going to be meeting a lot of folks that will determine whether they will do business with you based on your ...

God and Meditation
Stress is going to be an issue during an event. Now some folks suggest praying, and that will work.

But, ... What happens if you don't believe in an all powerful god? Do you still pray?

I don't think so because praying will make a nonbeliever (Infidel) feel like a fool or fraud.

But, ... You could meditate, even if you're a believer.

Wasting Money
There are many method for getting your preps. One way is quit wasting your money.

Let me give you an example.

I used to smoke, about two packs a day, for 13 years. I started when cigarettes were 50¢ a pack, and I quit when cigarettes went to $1.00 a pack. When I quit, I was smoking two packs a day, spending $730 a year.

Another example: me and the roommate were spending $50 ($25 each) a month on internet. I got rid of it and went back to the library, for free, saving $300 a year.

Link:
Wealth Soup - The 7 Dumbest Things You Waste Money On Every Single Month

Talking about Wasting Money
One of the problems with prepping is other folks like spending your money by suggesting some crazy stuff, like this list.

Now, don't get me wrong, this list sucks. Let me explain.

First, the food.

Do you drink milk? I don't. Plus, Meals Ready to Eat (M.R.E.s) are expensive.

Next, water.

Seven 55-gallon barrels, per person. Where does your family store this water? In the garage? That's where our cars go.

Third, shelter.

Oooh, that whole 'Three is Two; Two is One, and One is None" stupid saying again. Make a choice, have a tent and some tarps with rope or a structure with repair tools

Next, weapons

Battle rifle? At $1.000+ per rifle. Thirty magazines, at $360? That's almost an SKS rifle that doesn't need detachable magazines. 5.000 rounds? That's $3.500. 12 gauge shotgun? Who am I, Hercules? 10.000 rounds of .22LR? Have you seen prices for .22LR? Have you even seen .22LR?

I'm going to stop because you get my point.

P.S.
If you interested in  sensibly getting prepared, you will be interested in the e-book Prepper: Surviving the Tough Times Ahead. (Barnes and Nobles) (Smashwords)

Note:
You won't find it on Amazon because it has a bunch of rules and takes a 66% cut, ouch

P.S.
I need you help answering some questions, seriously.

Is the e-book too expensive? Should I change the price? Offer a coupon?

Change the cover? Sell the e-book on Amazon? Give up?

Offer it cheaper for libraries? How much for a library?

Any other suggestions?

Note:
By the way, you can get it at your local library. They just have to buy it for $4.95

Last week, I provided you and your family several links about the most effective means of protecting your family from disease, proper sanitation.

This week, I would like to provide a few about ...

First-Aid
With proper training, most people, including children, can provide first-aid treatment for themselves and others with a little training. This training can be provided by established organizations such as the Red Cross and the Red Crescent, or it can be learned from a first-aid manual with a little practice.

Lastly, it seems Canada needed a different first-aid manual ; - )

Two Kinds of Books
There are two kinds of books, books for fun and books for information.

By now, you know I wrote a book for information (Prepper: Surviving the Tough Times Ahead). Needless to say, there are other information books too, like a dictionary, encyclopedia, shop manual for your car, basic electricity guide, and on and on and on. Most of these books, you can borrow from the library.

But, ... There are some you are going to want to keep, such as a great first aid manual, awesome whole foods cookbook, and a good tactical manual.

There are also other books for fun, like romance novels, detective stories, collections of short science fiction stories, comic books, and many more.

Of course, when anyone (including me) tells you that there are only two ways/kinds/results/whatever of something, you know they're wrong. Right?

There is almost always a third way that is also true for books.

The third kind of book is a combination book. These books provide information and fun, such as Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank, One Second After by World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by

During an event, you and your family are going to want all three kinds of books. You're going to need books for information, books for entertainment, and books that do both.

But, ... Where to get them?

First, avoid Amazon. It seems they're ripping off authors. Yes, they are easy and the local bookstore probably uses them to get the books, and Amazon is cheaper then most folks. Just try and humor me.

Second, you can find books on the internet. The older out of copyright classic are usually free. Check out Project Gutenberg. They even have audiobooks, now.

Another group, doing similar work, is the Internet Archives. They have music, books, movies and much more.

The last group (I'm going to suggest, today) is the Compact Disk for the Third World (CD3WD). It is a vast collection of books and manuals written for developing countries.

The first link is part of it and .HTML

The second link is part .HTML and .PDF

This list has a lot of problems with it.

First, regular tap water is fine to store (If the city water is already o.k. to drink). Next, distilled water is about 88¢ per gallon while city water is 88¢ for a 1.000 gallons.

Powdered milk. Does your family even drink milk?

Flour! Never store large amounts of flour or other ground grains for your family's food storage. It has a shelf-life of a few months compared to a few decades for whole grains.

I have to stop.

Bill Jordan,
U.S. Border Patrol (ca 1965)
photograph by

Quote
This exchange is all over the interwed.

With that said, ... It is interesting

"He turned around to Bill and asked, “Mr. Jordan, what battle rifle would you stash away?”
Bill took another sip of his vodka tonic and said, “I’d put away a Smith & Wesson Model 19 and a box of cartridges.” Bill being from Louisiana, it came out sounding like “Kat-i-ges.”

Our local gun expert realized that Bill was a little hard of hearing, so he said, “No, Mr. Jordan, I meant what kind of AR would you want to have hidden away.”

Bill smiled, finished the vodka tonic, and said, “Sonny, I heard you the first time. And my answer is a Smith & Wesson Model 19 and a box of cartridges. If serious trouble starts and you can shoot at all, you can get whatever kind of little machine gun you’d want to carry. You could even get a little Jeep to drive and maybe even a nice looking uniform to wear… if you can shoot!”

The Gun
Many years ago, police officers carried revolvers because they were simple, rugged, and easy to use. Plus, they were the 'best' firearm for the times.

Depending on how old you are (and your budget), you may want to consider using older military gear to carry your gear.

'New' Stuff
It seems, the military has decided that the MOLLE vest might be a poor idea, so they have changed back to a similar system like the ALICE gear.

Oh well, ... But, the newest system will still use the MOLLE attachment process.

Penetrating Oil
"primers + oil = dead primers. If you're storing ammo right against the oiled metal, I'd say that there's at least a chance that some of the oil could coat the rounds and eventually make it into the primer pockets or penetrate the (admittedly teensy) gap between the bullet and the case itself.

Altoid Tin
Probably the smallest emergency evacuation kit is one made from an Altoids tin. Choosing Ammunition
There is a lot implied in this short blurb from Tam.

First, ... Don't Buy the Hype. Yes, Predator, Wolverine, Hydra, and other dramatic names sound cool, but do the products really work?

Second, ... Technology moves on. For some items, you and your family are going to be served just fine by wool blankets, wood stoves, and other older technology, but somethings (like food and ammo) are going to be used up. So, ... You can purchase 'advance' technology.

Third, ... Make sure it works. Yes, we can research on the internet, ask friends pointed questions, and do other second-hand investigations, but we need to make sure the tool or technique will work for our family.

Lastly, ... Tam is funny

At over one hundred dollars, these stoves aren't one of the 'Top Six Prepper Tools.'

But, ... The EcoZoom stoves are one of the biggest rip offs for preppers.

The second biggest rip off, for preppers, is the second stove. It uses expensive propane cylinders. A better stove would be a liquid fuel 'colemen' duel-fuel stove with a propane adaptor for the stove.

SKS or AR-15
For most of us, the choice of the 'best' rifle is going to be either the AR-15 or the SKS rifle. Both are inexpensive and plentiful.

We have several family members and family friends thinking about, joining, or have joined the military this year. One is a firefighter with the Marines.
