Where Did It Go?
As some of your know, Google's Blogger only allows an archive of 1000 posts. I have reached that limit, again.
So, ...
I am consolidating some of the Wednesday's posts and Other Stuff in one ginormous post ; - )
Needless to say, it's one big blurb of everything. Good luck ; - )
Update: 16 December 2014
I was wrong, I needed two big blurbs to hold everything.
So, ...
This one is January to June 2013

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,
Yer Ol' Woodpile Report
To me, anti-freedom forces have lost with this quote,
"People who rush out to purchase firearms in anticipation of gun control measures are not part of the "gun culture." The "gun culture" already has its arsenal stocked up. The "last-minute shoppers" are people who believe that one day they may need a gun and may not be able to buy one. These are the same people that clean out the grocery store before the first big winter storm hits." from P

Walker Sisters' Place
As humans, we have survived many hardships and primitive, at least to us, living situations.
So, ...
If a world-wide disaster happened disrupting our modern world, we might survive adapting technology from the past. Needless to say, we should not just focus on these United States for examples because we are a nation of immigrates and folks from other countries may find these United States' examples inadequate for their purposes, such as Siberian Russians

Val d’Orcia
There is the possibility some folks are taking the very looooooong approach to getting prepared. No, I'm not talking about taking a year to prepare (scroll down to the bottom for the 12 chapters). I'm talking, rural countryside, family estates, multi-generational, and ... "Big Money" kind'a efforts.
If you are, or you're dreaming like me. Here are two links to an Italian valley called Val d’Orcia.
P.S.
With homes and towns like that, the valley wasn't always happy.

If some of y'all are thinking really "Big Money," as in building towns and whole new social orders (and even if you're not) you might want to start researching star forts.

P.S.
With the invention of gunpowder, mortars, internal combustion engines, rifled-barrels, aircraft, and many other military technologies and military concepts (Air-Land Battle) star forts are obsolete for a reason, at least to the nation-state.
Note:
I am currently reading a science fiction collection titled The Transformer Trilogy by M.A. Foster. In the first book a world-wide disruption, caused by the assassination of one individual, brings the deaths of untold millions in the cities, suburbs, and populated countryside. Now that's doom and gloom.

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,
Emergency Evacuation Kit
The first link for today is to "Preparedness Advice Blog", written by Howard Godfrey. He has a short article with some good observations about bugout bags.
And, ...
Some not so good.
First, you only need a spoon to eat with. If you have some money (and can't handle eating with just a spoon), buy a spork. Plus, the mess kit is a poor idea; you only need a canteen cup, buy a stainless steel one. They're better, but an aluminum cup works, too.
Next, I can't say it enough. Carry enough water for the 1 to 2 day trip because your pack will get lighter as you travel. Remember, you're drinking water as you travel. ; - )
Third, just buy the military sleeping system, if you can afford it. They have some negatives, but a good night's sleep is important. Don't forget a sleeping pad for cold weather.
Lastly, like I said, Mr. Godfrey's article had some good observations that will give y'all something to think about as you get your bugout bag put together.

Firearms
I was over at "Notes from the Bunker" where Commander Zero was responding to a post from The Other Ryan from TSLRF.
Needless to say, somethings have gone up in price, but SKS rifles are still reasonable (barely) for $450 to $600 a rifle. A thousand rounds of ammunition is unavailable, except maybe from local suppliers. 357 revolvers are still running $450 to $600 depending on manufacturer, and .38 special and .357 magnum ammunition is back ordered everywhere I looked.
So, ...
Don't panic because ammunition will become more available as time goes by. Plus, rifle prices will probably (I hope) go down.
And, ...
Always remember, surging doesn't work because other folks will be rushing into the stores to buy what they need too.
P.S.
Remember, things may not get back to 'normal.'

Wednesday: 30 January 2013, Part Four
Welcome Preppers and Survivalist,
Firearms
Spartan, my brother, and I were talking last weekend, and we got to talking about firearms. Needless to say, you and your family have probably seen the dramatic increase in prices for AR-15 series and AK-47 series rifles and magazines. If you have some 'Safe Queens' and 'Oneses,' you might be able to turn this increase to your advantage.
First, 'Safe Queens' are rifles you never use; they just sit in your safe, never being used. "Oneses' are things that you have only one or two of. Let me give you an example.
Spartan has a HK-91 rifle clone. It's a safe queen, and he has only one of these rifles. Plus, he only has about seven magazines for the rifle and no spare parts.
Did I mention the rifle is non-standard for our families and friends?
So, ...
He's going to sell the rifle for a few grand (> $2.000) then he will turn around and buy a couple SKS rifles.
Some of y'all are still asking "Why? Why? Why? The HK-91 clone rifle is great, and magazines are cheap!'
That's true, but ...
Spartan can buy two maybe three SKS rifles and a case or two of ammo (if he can find the ammo) for what he might get for the HK-91 clone.
So, ...
If you have some safe queens, think about maybe selling them to get firearms that fit your family's standard weapons and some ammunition for the firearms, too.

Rifle, Handgun, Knife
In the military, if you're trying to kill someone, a soldier would use close air support, indirect-fire, then direct fire in that order. Using direct fire, a soldier would engage the enemy with machine guns, and as they got closer, she would use her rifle. If the enemy got even closer, and she ran out of ammo for her rifle, she would use a handgun. And, if all else failed, she would use a knife, then her hands to kill the enemy.
Hopefully, you and your family never have to face that situation.
But, ...
You might.

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,
Nuclear War
Today's two posts are going to be about ...
Threads
The first link is to a BBC television show titled "Threads" it was first shown in 1984.
The made for tv movie is a great 'What If' scenario for you and your family to think about, if you are preparing for a nuclear war.
Be warned. The BBC made some mistakes on the effects and the results of the nuclear attack.
First, nuclear winter (the cooling of the Earth caused by so much dust released into the atmosphere from the nuclear explosions) is exaggerated. There have been recent volcanoes that ejected a large amount of dust into the atmosphere. The Earth only cooled a couple of degrees, so no Winter in July.
Next, the last ten minutes, especially when Ruth dies, the citizens would have helped each other because they would have formed a community, by then. The children would know how to speak English because parents and possibly schools would have taught the kids. Lastly, the collapsed building would have been cleaned up and the bricks used for the rebuilding effort.
Needless to say, this movie isn't for young children.
Lastly, as you watch the movie, I want you to think about:
Proper Shelter
Water
Food
Medical Supplies
and, Protection

A fifteen minute video by Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto shows almost all the world's nuclear explosions from 1945 to 1998. One commenter said he failed to mention South Africa's and Israel's nuclear tests.
Just to put some perspective on the video.
Nuclear explosions #2 and #3 killed 150,000 to 240,000 people. All the other explosions were tests. If anybody died, it was by accident.

What will an Economic Collapse Look Like?
I found this article over at Backwoods Survival Blog; it gives some insight into possible disruptions caused by an economic collapse.
To me, this is probably the best quote, from the article.
"While I don’t expect a Zombie Apocalypse resulting from either scenario, temporary supply disruptions caused by market uncertainties will be inevitable — and that will lead to empty supermarket shelves, fuel shortages and, possibly, utility failures that will almost certainly result in civil unrest and increased crime in more densely populated areas."

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,
Before I begin today's post; I must remind you of something. First, the right of self defense is never denied. I say this for a reason. I was in the air-defense artillery during my brief military service, and we were taught to always protect our troops from attacking aircraft, even friendlies. Yeah, possibly killing a highly trained aviator and destroying a tens of millions of dollars U.S. aircraft attacking a few troops and their equipment.
Second, there are people that have stolen your rights to defend your family (for the folks living in foreign lands) and there are people trying to steal your right to bear arms in these United States. They need to go, in the next election, if possible.
Lastly, you and your family need to receive firearms safety training and get armed. After that, it is up to you and your family on what kind of and the extent of other equipment and training you will pursue.
With that said

In the infantry, there used to be a saying: Why stand when you can kneel, why kneel when you can squat, why squat when you can sit, why sit when you can lay down, and why lay down when you can dig a foxhole to shoot standing supported with a whole lot of cover, all around, with cleared fields of fire, final protective fire, and ...
O.K. I made that up, but the idea is still kinda true.

Three Possible Futures
I want to know the "Big" picture, about what might happen before, during, and after a collapse because I believe, my family and I can prepare to survive this catastrophe.
Well, one of the people I read to give me a perspective is Charles Hugh Smith.
In a recent article by him, Mr. Smith wrote about three broad possibilities that I believe you and your family need to think about.

Guns, Guns, and More Guns
One of my first stops on the internet, every morning, is Say Uncle. He usually has a lot of great links about various firearms related issues. One of my favorites is "Gun Porn"
So, ...
Here are a few links from Say Uncle.
Mid-length 38s, Old and New
From Oleg Volk Blog are pictures of two .38 caliber revolver. One is used, and refurbished; the other is new.
Mr. Volk was also kind enough to provide three links to companies that would bead blast and put a new protective finish (Cerakote) on older firearms and new ones, too.

Oh, I forgot to tell you.
He is a professional photographer, of firearms.
Smith & Wesson M&P Review
Needless to say, I recommend folks purchase .357 magnum revolvers and SKS rifles for their defensive firearms, for a disaster. My argument has been laid out many times in GSIEP. Needless to say, again, folks are going to make their own decisions about firearms, and that is good.
Because, ...
We don't need a bunch of people running around being exactly like me and my family. Plus, who says that combination is right for your family.
Needless to say, for a third time, if you have the desposable income and the time to practice, you might want to look into purchasing a different firearms for your family.
Remember, you will need to arm everyone in the family, including the new born babies. They grow up and hopefully learn to safely use a firearm and enjoy the shooting sports, and they may have defend themselves, in the future.
Plus, the price of firearms have and will continue to increase.

Anti-Freedom (Gun-Control) People Like the AR-15, Just Not for You

Lastly, the anti-freedom (gun control) folks are still continuing to try and limit you and your family's ability to own firearms.

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,
Nuclear War
I was reading the comments from an article about the Cold War. One commenter made the observation that people born in 1990 can remember the terrorist attacks on Flight 93, the Pentagon, and the World Trade Center, on September 11, 2001.
But, ...
They don't know or understand the terror of living with the possibility of a nuclear war with the Soviet Union, for 40 years. Plus, with the disinformation of the 80's, over nuclear winter and the mistaken beleif that everyone would die after a nuclear attack, most people don't know the basics of nuclear war survival.
Well, below are a few videos on the basics of surviving a nuclear attack.

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,
Two is One; One is None
Spartan, my brother, and I were talking about a book that I'm writing and we got to talking about the importance of bushcraft skills for preppers.
So, ...
I started doing some research on brushcraft skills. During my research, I found an article by The Weekend Woodsman about the importance of “Two is one, one is none”
Most seasoned preppers have probably heard about this concept. For the newer preppers, the saying means that you should have two of the same thing to do a task, take cutting cordage.
Using the concept “Two is one, one is none” you would consider two knives to be one knife, and one knife as no knives in your preparations.
But, ...
There is a problem with this concept.
First, if you're like my family, you don't have the money for two of everything.
Next, ...
Well, for me there is no second point because buying two of everything can be a poor idea, financially.
P.S.
Make sure you read the comments

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,
Peasant Food
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO), many years ago, produced a series of booklets called the Better Farming Series. These booklets offered advice on numerous subjects, usually about raising food.
Let me say that a different way.
There is a project that collected almost, if not all, of the Third World publications and recorded them to a compact disk (CD). It is called CD of the Third World.
Dang! Let me try again.
During an extreme disaster, you and your family may have to change your diet to insure your survival. One of the ways, to do this, is to eat what is considered peasant food, like rice and beans, corn and beans, or use very little meat in your family's diet.

Some of y'all might be asking yourself if I have gone off my rocker linking to an article about precision shooting because I advocate purchasing a SKS rifle and a .357 magnum revolver, first.
I have.
But, ...
Some of you (rural preppers, mostly) will need to own a precision rifle, and all its gear, especially folks living out in the wide open spaces. Needless to say, you will need to practice, practice, and practice some more after you learn the basics.
But, where can you learn the basics?

However, ...
If you're not taking my advice, you need to make sure you and your family stock plenty of magazines when prices come down. I can tell you from personal experience; magazine prices, usually, just increase over time.

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,
National Prepper Radio (NPR)
I was listening to an interview on the local National Public Radio station. During the interview, the guest mentioned that most people no longer cook from scratch.
Well, for preppers and survivalists that's probably true too.
But, ...
If you and your family are planning to use whole grains during a disaster, you need to practice using them, now.
So, ...
You need some basic tools. One of these tools is a grain mill.

Inflation, Again
Just like food and other necessities, the price of grain mills are also increasing.
Needless to say, I purchased a couple of grain mills, bought 'em for less than $80, a couple of years ago. I also added spare parts and other accessories such as an extra set of burrs and stones for the Little-Ark grain mill. I didn't get a motorize conversion kit, though; don't even the capability, yet.
Warning:
It seems the Australian company that advertises the Little-Ark for sell may be buying them from the U.S. manufacturer, marking up the price way more than needed, so be careful if you do an internet search instead of use the links below.

When a child accidentally shoots another child, I blame it on the parents.

Water Filters
We are use to a certain level of water quality, here in these United States, Germany, Sweden, Canada, Austria, France, Russia, and ...
During tough times, that water quality may decline, so you and you family may have to filter your water. There are a couple of methods of doing that.
First, you can use a portable or hand filter; these are designed for wilderness or short-term use. There are many brands available. One of these is the Katadyn Hiker Pro Microfilter. The portable filters would make a good addition to your emergency evacuation kit, if you are traveling a long distance (and don't have the ability to carry gallons of water) with your kit.
Another type of filter is the camp filter; these filters are designed for use at a base camp or longer-term use. There are approximately three manufacturers of these filters, Katadyn, Berkey, and AquaRain.

AquaRain Water Filter |
Last week, I linked to a review about the AquaRain Gravity water. If you're like me, you did a quick search for prices on this water filter.
At about $300 for a complete filter system, you may not be able to justify purchasing one of these camp or tabletop filters, Katadyn, Berkey, or AquaRain filters.
But, ...
You and your family may be able to afford about $1000 to create an improvised filter using the filters, by themselves.
Update: 23 May 2013
Whoa! Made a big mistake there. It's just over $100 (not $1000) for a set of filters to make an improvised camp filter, using just filters.

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,
The Look
I don't know how I found this link, but Brenda's blog Coffee, Tea, Books and Me caught my attention. (Definitely from some prepper source maybe even Brenda herself ; - )
Well, ...
Brenda got me to thinking about what does a prepper's home look like.
First, we need to relax because life is stressful, and that's just ordinary life
Second, we can learn from the Amish, Mennonite, Seventh Day Adventist, and other brothers and sisters that lead a simpler life. (O.K. not simpler)
Three, we can save money and improve our lives by ...
Four, we need to make provisions for expected and unexpected guest, including the furry kind.
Five, we need to learn to produce some of our food. Even if all you have is a deck, some containers, and a few flowering plants to practice.
Six, remember, relax and smile
Seven, raised beds.
Lastly, ...
If you head over to Brenda's blog, say "Hi" and "Thanks for the inspiration"

OPSEC
More likely than not, Brenda from Coffee, Tea, Books and Me isn't a prepper or a survivalist.
Plus, ...
Could you tell if she was a prepper?
So, ...
Make sure you and your family are practicing OPSEC

Firearms and Children
Many years ago, Jumper, my brother, and I took the children shooting. We had a Ruger 10/22, a Marlin Model 60, a Chinese SKS, and a Springfield Armory M1A
Needless to say, the kids loved shooting the Model 60.
Why?
It was easy to load, easy to handle, and fun to shoot.

I just thought of a neat idea.
Instead of using a business card holder, use magnetic paper as the labels.

Nuclear Warfare
One of the possible game changing threats facing all humans, not just preppers and survivalists, is nuclear warfare between various states (United States, Great Britain, France, Israel, China, India, Pakistan, and ..) or through terrorism.
