Friday's Thought and Other Stuff

Dear Preppers and Survivalists,

Prologue
There are several fiction books; you and your family should read.

One of them is When Autumn Leaves Fall by Andrew Zarowny. It is a good solid book (better than Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse) that will get you and your family to thinking about preparing for tough times.

Another good book is One Second After by William R. Forstchen. It will also get you and your family to thinking about tough times, but differently.

Winter
In seems, Mr. Forstchen didn't stop there. He wrote a series of books about the effects of an electromagnetic pulse attack on these United States. One of these books is titled The Final Day.

The Lottery
The odds of winning the Powerball are 292,000,000 to 1, but you and your partner play the game.

Because, ...

A winning ticket would be life-changing to say the least.

What else would be life changing? To your family? To the country? To the World?

How about a nuclear war? Nationwide Cyber Attack? Space War?

Let's take a nuclear war, ... for now.

China, Russia, and some of our 'allies' have the ability to launch 10 to 100 nuclear weapons towards our country. What's to stop them from doing that?

Of course, our country has the ability to retaliate in kind, plus more. You know M.A.D, mutually assured destruction.

O.K. That might stop them, but what happens if a leader or ruling party determines it's worth the losses to their country to attack? What stops them from attacking?

How about our shelter program, the Continuity of Operations program that, really only, protects the President, Congress, the Supreme Court Justices, and some select few government employees? Will that stop the hostile leader?

Neither do I.

Let's change the subject to a Nationwide Cyber Attack. During an attack, we possibly loss the ability to gather information, communicate with friends and family, power our cities, feed our citizens, treat our ill, defend our country, and much, much more.

How would that work out for you and your family?

Let us change the subject to a Space War. How would a space war that causes a Kessler Syndrome event effect you and your family? The Nation? Our World?

I'm going to stop because you see my point. There are some events, mainly low probability events, that would affect you and your family in ways that would be life-changing to the country and the World.

Things You Might Want to Think About

Cops
Let me get this straight, ...

The Massachusetts State Police supposedly have a bunch of officers overstating their work hours, which is fraud. Afterwards or just before that, the State Police had a scandal about a judge's daughter offering sex for drugs then a possible coverup of the arrest report.

Then, ...

An officer, who laundered money for a drug dealer but was granted immunity for her cooperation when she was younger, is fired.

Wow, ... I would hate to be in the Human Resource office, the next few years.

Wow, ... Trump was right.Mr. John Brennan and many like him should lose their security clearances when leaving government service.

Extortion
I guess these folks have never read Rudyard Kipling's poem Danegeld

Parents send their children to parochial schools for several reasons.

The biggest is to get a better education then the public schools.

The second reason, especially for Middle school is to try and overcome the predominate mindset of the local community.

A third reason is to help their children walk in their faith.

So, ...

The parents should have abided by the student handbook

Hillary Rodham-Clinton
I applaud Mr. Mueller. His efforts to hunt down tax frauds, income tax cheats, and people that take unreported money from foreign powers, are greatly appreciated

But, ...

When are Bill Clinton, Hillary Rodham-Clinton, and the Clinton Foundation going to be investigated for the same crimes?

First, the Don't

I don't agree with 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, and 3.

However, ...

I agree with #1 and #2.

With that said, ...

I also think our country should enforce the Second Amendment, so villains would have a harder time getting into prison.

Overheard

"A Perfect Storm Threatens America's Survival"

"Local officials have already expressed dehumanizing outlooks on the role of the re-education camps as “eradicating tumors” and “spraying chemicals on the crops to kill the weeds.” Should authorities decide that forced indoctrination has widely failed, much of Xinjiang’s minority population will be framed as irredeemable. And with the state-controlled Global Times claiming, in response to the recent U.N. condemnation of China’s racist policies in Xinjiang, that “all measures can be tried” in the pursuit of China’s “stability,” mass murder and genocide do not look like impossible outcomes."

"When they see that there is no longer a social compact of peace, they will begin violating it themselves."

"What do you do if you are the New York Times and 20 people show up to the white-supremacist rally that you had been breathlessly billing as further proof of the normalization of hatred in the Donald Trump era? Expand the definition of "white supremacist" to cover a large portion of the American electorate and its representatives."

"For more than half-a-century, the Democratic Party has sown the wind of radicalism. Now, they are about to reap the whirlwind of revolution."

"What never crosses their mind is what could happen if they terrorize the wrong person and he decides to take action. They never think about what could happen if the public begins to turn on them in large numbers. No one in the ruling class thinks about the mob showing up with torches and rope. They don’t even think the mob will show up at the voting booth and cast a protest vote. Instead, they assume bad election results are the doings of gremlins and magic fairies with sinister names like Boris and Natasha."

"Nothing is as permanent as we image--especially super-complex, super-costly, super-asymmetric, and super-debt-dependent systems."

"So why are we a Western nation and not a third world hellhole engaged in ceaseless tribal warfare?"

Friday's Thought and Other Stuff

Dear Preppers and Survivalists,

Never Enough Time (ca 2013)
geralt

Stress
Work isn't going as planned. We have hit some 'difficulties,' so work has become stressful, more than planned.

So, ...

I have been 'chilling,' after work.

In other words, ... I have been unproductive.

Copper, Silver, and ...
Pennies and nickels (copper) are cheap. According to Coinflation, the value of U.S. copper pennies and nickels have settled to 1.7¢ for a penny and 3.8¢ for a nickel. Down from their highs of a few years ago, but still a good deal.

So, ...

Keep on collecting and saving those pre-1982 pennies (from your pocket change) and any nickel (purchase a few rolls from the local bank) for your stash of SHTF cash.

Silver is getting cheap, down to $14.71, as of this writing.

So, ...

You might want to think about buying a few ounces for you and your family.

But, ...

Remember this warning! (Off the top of my head)

Silver and Gold

Silver and gold will not slack you family's thirst, only a stored water supply will do that.

Silver and gold won't keep your children from crying from hunger, only your stored food will do that.

Silver and gold will not keep the thieves, rapist, and murders at bay, only a firearm with ammunition, in trained hands, will do that.

Lastly, ...

Why should I or anyone else trade you and your family the necessities of life when all I have to do is wait for your family to die, so I may take from you!

Gold
The silver to gold ratio is at 81 to 1, so it takes 81 ounces to purchase an ounce of gold, not a good deal, to me

So, ...

Either gold is overvalued or silver is undervalued

Cash
Last, because I have to go to work, ...

You need some cash (how much is up to you) in your home, in a safe place, just in case.

Overheard

"The faction that used to be the Democratic party can be described with some precision these days as a three-headed monster driving the nation toward danger, darkness, and incoherence. Anyone interested in defending what remains of the sane center of American politics take heed:"

"Christmas 2020"

"But that seems like a risky social calculus -- especially since Sweden's statistics agency forecasts that the foreign-born population will only continue to grow in the future."

"In theory, it sounds like a winning formula."

"And knowing that, they also know that absolutely everybody else is broke and unable to meet their obligations."

"So, Americans listen up, do not fall for the false promises and do not extinguish the light that is left to allow humanity a measure of self respect."

"The solution to this will not be the same as last time. There is no secular authority willing to challenge the power of the new theogarchs. Mark Zuckerberg went to Congress and lied his face off, knowing they were afraid to lay a hand on him. By the 2020 election, social media will have banned Trump and all Trump supporters. The solution, in time, is the people in these oligopolies will have to fear the peasantry in real space. The same civil authorities that are too weak to oppose the theogarchs will be too weak to protect them."

Friday's Thoughts and Other Stuff, on a Saturday

Dear Preppers and Survivalists,

 Canadian Band WHY (ca 2013)
Source
WHY music

Why? Why? Why?
It's easy, as you probably guested.

Exercises, especially the operational exercises, allow you and your family to test your preps under real world conditions.

That's right. There is no magical, in your dreams, this is how things are going to go when you and your family rush out the door with your emergency evacuation kits. Exercises make you (especially if your family is truthful with themselves) prove that you and your family have this capability.

Yeap, ... It's a dose of reality that most people don't want in their preps.

Do you have a grinder?

Not Practice
Now, ... Exercises aren't practice because exercises happen in real time, at the speed of life. Just like they will during an actual event.

But, ...

You have to be safe! Not stupid!

I'll be back, unless you see this message then that's it, ... for now.

Friday's Thoughts and Other Stuff

Dear Preppers and Survivalists,

Federal Emergency Management Agency Logo (ca 2007)
Ysangk

Emergency Preparedness
When I was trying to determine a name for this blog, I didn't want to go with something trendy, such as 'The Prepper Blog,' 'Getting Started in Survivalism,' or 'Surviving the Coming (The Threat Du Jour).' I wanted something professional.

So, ... Ten years ago, I picked 'Getting Started in Emergency Preparedness' because Emergency Preparedness is a real profession.

That's Right!

You or a loved one can attend college, find a position at the federal, state, or local level, and get paid big bucks as an emergency preparedness professional. Now, sometimes you may be a police officer or a firefighter, at the local level, but you're still a professional. Heck, there is a federal agency (You may have heard of them) called F.E.M.A., the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Needless to say, ...

You're probably wondering why I am mentioning this little tidbit to you.

Exercises
There are about six or seven types of exercises, depending on who you ask. According to the CHA Hospital Preparedness Program, there are seven while FEMA lists six types of exercises.

O.K. You're still probably wondering, so let me explain.

Exercises allow you and your family to...

* Evaluate the preparedness program

* Identify planning and procedural deficiencies

* Test or validate recently changed procedures or plans

* Clarify roles and responsibilities

* Obtain participant feedback and recommendations for program improvement

* Measure improvement compared to performance objectives

* Improve coordination between internal and external teams, organizations and entities

* Validate training and education

* Increase awareness and understanding of hazards and the potential impacts of hazards.

* Assess the capabilities of existing resources and identify needed resources

In other words, ... Exercises allow you, your partner, and your family to evaluate your preps, identify weakness in your preps, test your preps, make sure family members know what they are supposed to do, get suggestions and recommendations from your family, tell your family where they are at in their journey of preparedness, coordinate with your team (friends, family and trusted coworkers) make sure your family is learning and practicing their skills, teach your family about possible threats, and tell your family whether they really need a new piece of equipment or stay with what you got.

Types of Exercises
Like I said, depending on who you ask 'What are the different exercise types in Emergency Preparedness?' will determine whether they list five, six, seven, or possibly eight exercise types.

Since you asked me, ...

The National Fire Academy holds a table-top emergency preparedness exercise
with firefighters from across the country
simulating a structure fire and other emergency situations in a mock city
ca. 2003
photograph by
Jocelyn Augustino

Paper or Discussion
These are the exercise where you, your family, and your team talk about your plans, usually it's a one-way talk like a class.

In these exercises, you or your partner familiarize or teach your family the plans or any changes to a family plan. It could be as simple as when you teach your children how to quickly evacuate for a house fire or what the adults are going to do when they have to quickly pick up any children from school.

Sgt. Brianne Roudebush

Operational
These types of exercises are when you, your family, and your team actually go through a plan. An operational exercise can be a tabletop exercise, a functional exercise, and a full-scale exercise.

Tabletop
For tabletop exercises, people sit around and talk about what they are going to do for a specific event.

You know what I'm talking about....

You're watching The Walking Dead with your partner and she says, ... If some zombie comes stumbling through the sliding glass door, I'm going to grab the shotgun and shot their head off then grab the sheets of plywood and nails from the the barn and board up all the windows and glass doors in the house. Your eldest daughter chimes in with, ... I'll get the shovel and broom then sweep and shovel the body parts out the door into a trash can while Mom starts fortifying the house. Your eldest son says, ... I'll round up all the younger kids and get them upstairs, grab the .22 LR pistol with five magazines from the ready gun locker then come back downstairs to pull security for everyone, and so on.

That's a tabletop exercise

Functional
For functional exercises, small groups go out and actually complete a task or a series of task, just like they would during an event.

You know, ...

When you go camping and you have your older children build a fire as they prepare dinner using food items from your emergency evacuation kit+, while they wait for the fire to burn down to coals so they can cook dinner then clean up the dishes, properly dispose of any food waste, and return everything to its proper place (just like you would, in case you and your family had to quickly leave an area)

Full-Scale
These exercises are when the whole team works under simulated events using the tools, equipment, and people that they would for a real event.

Like that time, one winter weekend, you and your partner turned off the electricity to the house, so you and your family could practice what they would do during a winter power outage.

Why?
I know, I know, ... You're still trying to figure out what my choice of blog names has to do with you and your family's preps.

You'll have to wait because I'm going to go read Yer Ol' Woodpile Report ; - )
