Another Event
During tough economic times, some folks are going to be homeless, not by choice, so you're going to need housing. At $600 to well over $1.000 a month, an apartment might be too expensive for you, so you could share a place, like I do.

Most Families
For most folks, all you need to store is extra bagged, boxed, bottled, canned, and frozen food that your family normally eats. For other families, you will need to store whole grains, dried beans, and other whole foods.
But, ... Either way, you need to know how long these foods will last.

Mindset
Katniss and I disagree on certain things. One of these is talking about tough times. She feels that talking about bad situations will bring on those events where I believe the opposite.
Either way, you and your family need to communicate about the potential events that you and your family may face.
At first, go with the easy ones like hurricanes, winter storms, and other natural disasters that happen on a seasonal schedule. This will get you and your family thinking about potential disaster which develops the mindset that "Tough Times can happen to me and my family." Plus, what's really cool about doing it this way; your family won't get scared!
The second great thing about introducing your family to seasonal events (disasters); they will need to update their supplies every couple of months!
Because, ... It's hurricane season, right now, and it's winter storm season, in five or six months!
Lastly, it will get your children thinking, problem solving, and ... empower them especially if you take their researched advice!
Damn, ... I bet you didn't know I was a liberal!

Lighting is very important. It extends the day, so you and your family can complete more tasks.
Needless to say, there are different methods for providing this light. On of these methods is ...
Carbide Lamps
Most people don't know about carbide lamps, so they are overlooked by preppers during their research on providing light for their families.
Well, ... Carbide lamps use calcium carbide and water to produce acetylene gas. The gas is ignited with a striker, and the lamp produces a soft glow.
If you're a history buff, you know carbide lamps were used by miners and ...
Link:
Rams Horn Studio - Miner's Lamps

Cavers
People that explore underground, especially in caves, are called ... Cavers. They also use carbide lamps to provide light because carbide will last forever (Really, as long as it stays dry).
Cavers like carbide lamps for a few reasons. First, carbide lasts forever. Two, the light is a 'gentle' light, so it's easy to see in a cave. Three, ...
I don't know; you'll have to ask a caver ; - )

Don't Panic
A 1000 point drop in two days can be nerve racking, especially for small investors.
So, ... You may be thinking about pulling your money out of the stock market especially "If" you're close to retirement.
Don't Do It!
Why? ...
First, if you're close to retirement, you should have already been diversified (around 60%) in bonds or a bond fund.
Second, you haven't realized a loss, yet. If you sell now, you realize the loss. Plus, you can't get that money back.
Third, you're diversified, so your bond fund will go up ('cause everyone is selling stocks then buying bonds) as your stock fund goes down.
Fourth, you're a prepper, right?
So, ... You have secure shelter, stored water, canned food, medical supplies, firearms with ammunition, a second income stream, and ... all the other stuff; you have been reading about all these years.
Fifth, the Government will protect you! Ha, ha, ha
What to Do?
First, ... buy!, Buy!!, BUY!!!
Yes, "If" you have some cash sitting around doing nothing, look around for some bargains in dividend paying stocks from the big-name companies. You know ...
Ha, ha, ha, ... You thought I was going to suggest some stock picks ; - )
Second, take this time to really look at your investments. Are they working for you? If they're not, what can you do to change them.
Third, take a hard look at your family's preps. Do they work? If not, what needs to be done to make them work?
Fourth, ...
Don't Panic!!!
Lastly,
I have written a lot for a Wednesday, so ...
Come back on Friday for an article about setting up a food storage program for you and your family.
Note:
I am writing this on Monday, the 24th.
So, ... I may or may not have a chance to update this blurb.

Make sure you read the warnings at the bottom of the page!

What, then, Can You Do?
As you know, I advocate for everyone in your family to be armed (Yes, even your Goth child)
At one handgun (.357 magnum revolver), one carbine (SKS Rifle), one .22 LR rifle (Marlin Model 60) your family will be awash in weapons. Three firearms times four family members that's 12 guns in the house. Hey, it adds up quick!
Link:
WeaponsMan - Technology Can’t Save Kids from Guns. What Can?
http://weaponsman.com/?p=24820
Note:
You will have to scroll, about halfway, down the page to get to the part I want to emphasize.
P.S.
To me 'Smart' Guns are a poor idea, until the military adopts them.
Not, really ; - )
But, ... A technology that you can give to an 18 year old; sent to kill their country's enemies; in the dirt, rain, snow, and ...; in a foreign country with little chance of resupply; and all the other things that the M-16 series rifle, the M1911A1 pistol, the M240 machine gun, the M2HB .50 caliber machine gun, and ... had to deal with to work, over the last one hundred years, is a good start.
Until then, ... Just Say 'No' to Smart Guns!
History
First, I hope, I haven't linked to this article, in the past ; - )
Second, as you and your family get prepared for coming events, make sure you're getting prepared using real world events.

Sales
It's getting that time of the year again; the summer heat is slowly turning to winter's cold.
So, ... You and your partner are probably looking at the store sales to find summer bargains for your family like ...
Thermal Underwear
Ooops, ... This is a winter bargain, but, the crummy economy is forcing retailers to discount earlier than normal, this year.
Like these items from Sierra Trading Post, Women's Kenyon Baselayers.
Layering
Needless to say, you need some knowledge to use these baselayers, effectively.
Link:
Sierra Trading Post - The Layering Guide
http://www.sierratradingpost.com/lp2/layering-guide/?utm_source=Guides&utm_medium=Catalog&utm_campaign=Layering-Guide-2
Suggestions
From my experience, you and your family need two 'weights' of thermal underwear, lightweight and medium weight. The lightweight will cover you for most cold weather events; where you're working or moving around a lot.
The medium weight thermal is good for hanging out, not doing much, in the cold.
Of course, you need to add appropriate footwear, socks, gloves, hats, and other items to be truly warm.
Yeah, ... I need to write a longer article about this matter ; - )
Putting My Money Where My Mouth Is
Yep, ... I recently purchased about $200 worth of light and medium weight thermal underwear for my partner from Sierra Trading Post.
Let me tell you about it.
First, I ordered two pair, one in lightweight and another in medium weight, in a non-tactical color (blue and purple)
When they arrived, I had my partner try them on (Katniss is 'picky' about her clothes)
She gave me the thumbs up then I bought four pairs of each. One pair was in the non-tactical colors. The others were in black.
The two non-tactical colored pairs will be worn, for everyday. (Last year, Katniss' work lowered the building temperature)
The three pair in 'tactical' color will be cached, at a relative's home ; - )

Poison
One of my college professoras used to live near a canned food factory. One day an employee, a neighbor, brought over a couple of cases of green beans for her family to eat.
Of course, ... She asked why?
The employee told her a story about how the lids had a little tiny hole in their tops from a defective can lid placer onner. It seems the machine, once the lid was sealed, would press down one last time and leave a very tiny hole, in the top.
This tiny hole would let oxygen enter the can. If the beans weren't cooked long enough, the beans could contain a neurotoxin.
So, ... The factory did a recall then gave it away to their employees, for free, with the instructions to thoroughly heat the beans before eating.

During an event, you and your family may encounter different foods, that you're not use to eating.

Link:
The Survivalists Blog: Victoria S - The Foxfire Book Series a Break-Down of Contents and Review

Magazines
Second, another resource at your local library will be its magazine. Depending on your librarians, you will find such great magazines as ...
Backwoods Home
Mother Earth News
Countryside and Small Stock Journal
The Backwoodsman
Plus, all of these great magazines have compilations of their 'best' articles. Heck, Backwoods Home has all their magazines, in 23 books!
And, ... They are on sale!
Ooooh, I almost forgot. "If" you donate the magazine (see your local library for details) you can still read it and take the donation off your taxes!
And, ... Help others get prepared for the tough times ahead.
Loans
Lastly, most libraries participate in an inter-library loan program.
So, ... "If" they don't have the book, they can find it for you to read for free or a small fee. That's how I was able to read Boston's Gun Bible, a $30 book, for $5.00 : - )
Trust me, it's not worth $10

Speculative Fiction
I like reading and studying, if you haven't noticed.
But, ...
It can get boring reading reports, informative articles, and other nonfiction accounts of survival.
So, ... I also read fictional works, such as the Dies the Fire series of books by S.M. Stirling. So far, I have gotten through Dies the Fire, The Protector's War, and A Meeting at Corvallis. All of these novels have brought up things to think about for surviving a coronal mass ejection (CME) or electromagnetic pulse event (EMP).
Well, ... Here is a series from Michael Greer, from The Archdruid Report about a series of different events.
Remember:
No matter how well developed a fictional work is written, it is still the imagination of a writer.

Caches
Needless to say, you're probably not worrying about supplying your family with food and water, 500 years in the future.
