About
Almost every Wednesday, I provide internet links to informative sites about surviving various events. Depending on the subject, the information contained in the link, and other considerations, I may write a short blurb, about the link or provide more information, about the subject.
Warning
These links, may or may not, disappear as the internet sites get renewed, become dormant, or get terminated.
Either way, ...

Dual Use
Some of us, including me, have a hard time justifying certain supplies to our partners. For some, it's purchasing silver and gold, firearms and ammunition, or long-term food storage and a grain grinder.
For others, they may have a difficult time because they have to justify the basics, such as alternative shelter and cooking equipment.

The Hype
I have always wanted to live in Israel, since I was a teenager.

Because the Israeli military is kick ass, until I joined these United States military and found out their opponents suck at warfare.

The Scout Rifle
I have many different thoughts on arming you and your family during an event. For most families, a SKS rifle with a .357 magnum revolver would be the 'best.' They are inexpensive and simple to operate.
For other families, an AR-15 with a Beretta 92 pistol would be the best. These would work for a family with one or two (maybe more) military veterans, from these United States, because of all the practice and training they have received from the military.
For other families, an AR-15 with a Clock 19 would be the 'best,' especially if they are current or former police officers.
For other families, a surplus bolt-action rifle with a low-power scope and a .38 Special revolver would be 'best' because of cost issues or a family looking for a simple and rugged combination for a cache.
Either way, ...

Just an Idea
At $1199, suggested retail, this is an expensive rifle especially when you and your can purchase a SKS rifle and a .357 magnum revolver for the same amount of money, with some left over for ammo.
But, ... It gives you an idea

Needless to say, I still think a .357 revolver is the 'best' inexpensive handgun for preppers.

Water Catchment Systems
You and your family can 'Work Hard or Work Smart.' It's up to you which one it's going to be when it comes to water.
Let me give you an example.
You can dig a well, by hand after an event (working hard) or you can build a water catchment system before the event (work smart)
Either way, it's up to you to start these project, now.

Health
I feel most preppers have unrealistic expectations about their medial and health preps. We tend to focus on the cool, neato, and highspeed stuff when we (you and your family) should focus on the basics, keeping clean by washing and brushing your teeth, getting enough exercise, and first-aid.
Oh yeah, .... Washing your hands is more important then you think ; - )

After a handgun for personal protection, for everyone in the family, and the required equipment and ammunition to effectively use it, a semiautomatic rifle for defending your family, for everyone in the family, and the required equipment and ammunition to effective use it, you might want to get one or two bolt action rifles for hunting, animals and humans.

Of course, I have warned you about mistaking a gun collection or firearm's hobby as prepping. It isn't because giving your partner a Japanese Type 14 Numba pistol, while your children are shooting a Webley Revolver and a Browning Hi-Power pistol (both British handguns), and you shooting the latest Glock is a poor idea when it comes to ammunition commonality, much less using the same magazine.

Power and Power Production
Without power, our modern society would stop, very quickly.
Don't believe me?
Try to pump gasoline or diesel out of an underground tank, much less pull crude oil out of the ground, convert it to a usable fuel, transport it a few thousand miles, and ... pump it into your vehicle that was assembled in a massive factory that uses water (pumped from the ground, treated to make the water usable, and transported many miles), built by workers using parts manufactured from twenty different factories in fifteen different states, commuting thirty minutes, to work the third shift, in a factory illuminated by electric lights, built in a factory, supplied by a coal-fired power plant ...
Much less, read a book by candlelight.

Doing Other Things
As you probably guessed, I have been doing other things, beside writing about getting prepared for the unfolding challenges, facing our families.
So, ... Come back on Friday to learn a little bit more about getting prepared for the tough times ahead.
Snipers
As noncombatants, we think our families will be immune to direct efforts to kill or wound them that is definitely wrong. There are several periods where people were shot to lure other, more important, people to the kill zone.
On other occasions, you and your family could be targeted because .... You are the target.
Lastly, you and your family may need to become 'snipers' to defend yourselves.

Early Innovators
A few words of warning for preppers.
First, what is 'new' isn't always 'better,' especially when preppers should be looking for reliable, functional, and cost effective equipment to use during an event.
Second, as you can see from Uncle's article, he has spent quite a bit of money to 'upgrade' his defensive pistols; something you and your family may not be able to do because you're also buying long-term food storage, extra needed medical supplies, and other essential items for an event.
Oooh, and doing that for three, four, five, or more weapons can be cost prohibitive.
Lastly, you and your family also need to be asking yourselves, 'How do we get spare parts for our equipment, during an event?'
As one example, it will be hard to do that for 'boutique' weapons, such as the FN SCAR, IMI Tavor, or ...

Come and Go
Some folks are here for the first time, researching the skills and equipment their families will need during an event, such as a hurricane, terrorist knife attack, or ... the financial collapse of the world.
While others have been reading for a few years.
The Basics
When it comes to medical preparedness, you should start with three things.
First, you need to store extra require medications, such as your parent's blood pressure medicine, your seasonal (prescription and over the counter) allergy medication, and your child's insulin.
Second, you and your family should stock a first-aid kit. This kit can be basic or extensive, depending on your level of training.
Third, I suggest, you, your partner, and your child obtain training, to use your family's first-aid kit.

A Mix
Hopefully, as of this writing, we are not in a panic, buying firearms and ammunition, as Ms. Hillary Rodham-Clinton surges in the polls in the presidential election polls.
If we are, remember ...
First a handgun (.357 magnum revolver), then appropriate ammunition (SJHP .38 Special).
Second, a semi-automatic rifle (SKS rifle), then appropriate ammunition.
Lastly, the equipment to run these guns, such as a holster, a sling, cleaning equipment and cleaning supplies, and a locked cabinet for protection from untrained hands.

Carbines

One, Two, Three, and More
For families on a strict prepping budget, when it comes to long-term food storage, you only have one choice, whole grain wheat (hard red winter wheat berries)
For families with a bigger budget, you should get dried beans and long grain white rice.
For families on an even bigger budget, you might want to think about this list.
Link:
BasisGear - 103 Survival Food Prepper Should Check In Their List in 2016
http://basisgear.com/prepper-survival-food-list/
But, But, But
You're probably saying, 'You have always told us to never store flour, cornmeal, or other ground foods.
That's true, but ... If you and your family will use it before it goes 'bad' then there is no lost. Just understand, you still shouldn't store 500 pounds of flour, unless you own a bakery.
You're also probably thinking, 'Ground spices don't last very long.'
You're right, but ... If you consider salt, sugar, and the whole spices, they do store for a very long time.
Lastly, you're thinking, 'This is a lot of stuff. Some of it, my family doesn't like.'
You make a good point, but ... Like any other list (including mine) you have to modify the list to fit your family's needs.

Beer
Earlier today, I tried to buy fuel for my vehicle, but my debit/credit card was denied. Since I have a half of a tank of gasoline, I drove on and didn't worry about it.
Well, ...
Later on, after work, I stopped for a beer to have with dinner. I paid cash.
Cash
It's always a good idea to carry a little bit of cash with you, just for an emergency. The amount is up to you, but I would suggest enough to fill up your vehicle's fuel tank, once or twice.
Having any more, in your pocket or wallet, would be a great loss (at least to me) if you were robbed.
Yes, I know you live and work in a nice neighborhood, but you wouldn't be reading this if you didn't think about it, every once in a while.
Emergency Fund
Yeeeessss, I know, buying beer isn't an emergency but having one, two, or even six months worth of cash is a good hedge against unexpected emergencies, like the washing machine going kaput, a vehicle going kaput, or a job going ... away.

Kill!, Kill!, Kill!
I try to avoid, at least I think I do, linking to the militia-type blogs, since the number one rule of prepping is ...
Run Away!!!
Needless to say, I just learned, I am usually wrong because they have good articles about ...

Not Again!!!
O.K. Not really because I keep telling you to pack an emergency evacuation kit, purchase and fill water storage containers, store medium or long-term food storage, build a first-aid kit, buy and learn how to safely use a .357 magnum revolver and a SKS rifle, and a lot of other stuff, before buying silver and gold.
With that said, some food for thought.

Math
All power production involves math, take some hydroelectric projects.
First, they fill up the holding area (lagoon, tank, lake, reservoir, or ...) with pumps using cheap electricity (most just use plain ol' rain) at night then the hydroelectric station releases the water to another holding area as they produce power with the resleased water.
Neat, isn't it.

Note:
Needless to say, as your family gets prepared, you will need to 'store' energy for emergencies.
Using:
* Batteries
* Liquid Fuels
And, ...
More Math
Of course, you and your family aren't going to need 225 megawatts of storage capacity, like Taum Sauk Hydroelectric Power Station.
But, you are going to need to 'size' the generator to your family's needs, during an event.

That's enough power to light about 25,000,000 L.E.D. light bulbs, if my math is correct ; - )
