About
I have been promising myself for years to start the archive, sooner than later. Hopefully, this will work out, so I can avoid running out of storage space, at GSiEP (Getting Started in Emergency Preparedness) before the end og the year.

Warning
These links, may or may not, disappear as the internet sites get renewed, become dormant, or get terminated.

Either way, ...

Car Kit
Depending on the day, I may be in my car for about six hours and will travel 350 miles. On other days, I'm only in my car for 30 minutes and travel 30 miles.

Either way, I have a car kit.

Trunk Gun
It use to be called a 'Truck Gun.' It was carried in the back window of a rancher's pickup truck. The, usually a rifle, firearm was used to dispatch troublesome varmints, like coyote, wolves, and ... skunks.

Usually, the rifle was an inexpensive bolt-action surplus military rifle or a lever-action carbine. They would get knocked around and beat up, but the truck gun worked.

Now a days, they're called trunk guns

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,

J.M. Browning
holding a Browning Automatic Rifle with Mr. Burton (ca 1918)
 source
World War I U.S. Army Signal Corps Collection

'Stealing'
I'm quoting the whole blurb, from an article at WeaponsMan, because ...

It is sooo cool.

Springfield Armory M1911

Nope, this isn’t one of those imitation Illinois Springfields, this is the real deal from Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, one of 25,767 Model 1911 pistols made at the Armory under a contract provision that let the Government produce a limited number of pistols in its own arsenals. There were several problems in this first run, including a lack of drawings, according to a fascinating report on Imgur.

From the start Colt relied on JMB [John Moses Browning] to build a prototype, and then use that prototype to form the basis of their tooling. No detailed drawings were ever made by Colt.
This delayed Springfield’s ability to begin producing the pistol. To create the machinery needed Springfield ordered 20 pistols from Colt, then took the averages of each part to establish the dimensions they would create tooling from.
So it’s not just an M1911, but an official US Army reverse-engineered M1911 as well. Long before Chinese arsenals ever took a dial caliper to a bucket of 1911 parts, the US Army had to do it!

Link:
WeaponsMan - Friday Tour d’Horizon, 2016 Week 02

Wikipedia - John Moses Browning
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Browning

Just so you know:
These United States produced so many M1911A1 pistols that they quit buying them in 1945 and they issued new ones, up until the 1990s, from the WW II stock.

I wonder what other firearms are still in storage waiting for another world war?

Magazines

P.S.
All joking aside, you need at least 20 detachable magazines for each rifle that your family owns because magazines are a critical item. Without magazines, you have an expensive single-shot.

So, ... Spend the  $80 $60 now, not later before they are banned.

Ha, Ha, Ha,
Yep, I bought one hundred of them back a few years ago when they were 50¢ each, in bulk.

Note:
That's one of the reasons why I like the SKS rifle for most preppers, no magazines!

Not Enough
You and your family need to store at least one gallon of water per person per day.

So, .... If you're getting ready for a three week event, you need to store three gallons (12 liters) of water, just for you.

So, ... A family of five needs fifteen gallons (60 liters) for a three day event.

Well, ... Guess what?

Some people think that's not enough

Another
One of the 'problems' of owning a weapon that uses detachable magazines, you need to store them.

Now, don't go all crazy thinking you need to buy this product. Nope, you can make your own with cloth from the local charity store, worn out denim pants, or other inexpensive source of durable material.

The same goes for the plastic box because you can use a cardboard box, plastic tote, or other inexpensive box.

Heck, I stored a bunch of different magazines in a cardboard box, for about five years, under my bed when I was in the military.

Handguns
The first firearm, I suggest you purchase, is a handgun.

Now, you have two choices.

You can pick a revolver because they're simple and require minimal equipment to use.

Or, ...

You can choose a pistol. These handguns will require magazines and other equipment

But, ...

Either way, they both require practice and training.

Education
Training is important. It helps you learn new skills, but you have to make sure the training actually teaches relevant skills for your area.

Take bushcraft.

Do you need to learn to procure water by mushing up the inside of a barrel cactus then dipping the moisture out of the cactus with a cup?

Or, ...

Do you really need to learn how to make an improvised water catchment system from a blue tarp, four posts, and a plastic bucket?

Scout Rifle
There is a concept that has been kicked around for years. It was first, probably, promoted by Col. Jeff Cooper, of Cooper's Color fame. It takes a short, magazine-fed, bolt-action rifle in .308 (7.62 NATO), adds a scope, and you have the perfect ...

If you have a two-week supply of water, a year supply of food, firearms for everyone with cartridges, 3 months of extra needed medicine, paid off your debt, and a host of other things, you might want to purchase some silver and gold.

Ebstorfer World Map (ca 1234)

Gervase of Tilbury

Back in the Day
I can tell; I'm getting old. I am starting to use "Back in the day" when I'm talking about certain things.

For some of y'all that doesn't mean anything.

Well, ... for former military that's what the old soldiers said to us. Ha, ha, ha

Maps
Katniss and I were driving back from South Carolina (More about that, later), and we were using a smart phone application to plot our route.

Well, ... Like all financial strapped preppers, I was slightly unprepared.

While you gasp, let me explain.

Jumper bought a new truck, so he had an older vehicle that needed a new owner. An older vehicle-type that Katniss had been coveting, so I bought it for her.

To make a long story short, we flew out on Thursday, stayed four days, and drove the new (to us) vehicle home, a thousand mile trip.

Well, ... I didn't have the money to also purchase one of those highway map atlases.

Needless to say, I could have used one for the drive through Nashville.

Hand Drawn
Now, some of y'all are going 'But, but, ... but.'

The cook, Mr. Mauldin, and others hauled the pancakes up the mountains by mule train to feed the soldiers.

The Basic Four
During an event, you might be worried about getting enough calories to survive. One method of doing that, before the event, is to store the basic foods.

According to the Latter-day Saints, the basic foods are whole wheat, dried milk, salt, and sugar

Sugar
To find sugar, you can look in your local grocery store, China-Mart, or warehouse store.

Probably the lowest price can be found at the warehouse stores.

Now, ... Do you buy the beet sugar or the cane sugar?

Link:
Gizmodo -Evaporated Cane Juice Is Just Sugar
http://gizmodo.com/evaporated-cane-juice-is-just-sugar-1778951255

The Answer
You purchase either one 'cause sugar is sugar.

As long as it doesn't have any filler

Link:

And,

Gaiam: Life - 10 Worst Food Additives & Where They Lurk
http://life.gaiam.com/article/10-worst-food-additives-where-they-lurk

The Bad
Yeap, there is no link for this, just an observation.

You have to be careful when you're doing a calorie comparison for food storage systems. Some companies include the cans of sugar in the calorie count.

So, ... You're really paying lots and lots of money for sugar, not food.

Plus, why are you paying for sugar packaged in a metal can? ($15 for five pounds. $10, on sale, not including shipping) When you can buy 50 pounds at a warehouse store for the same price?

Ooops, I was wrong. There is a link.

A Group of Friends,

The "Group"
If you're trying to survive by yourself, it's easy! Except for the whole security, doing chores, and all the other stuff that humans need to stay alive and sane.

So, ... Sooner or later, you're going to have a group. At first, it will be your immediate family; you, your partner and some children, then it might grow to include your brother's or sister's family with a few in-laws thrown into the mix.

Either way, it's going to be a ...

Link:
Stealth Survival - Group Survival: The Logistics Nightmare

Finding Your "Group"
Now, some folks are going to build a group from an existing organization, think Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, Wednesday Night Poker Group or Bowling Team, or even work!

This is a, kind'a, good idea, but it has its limitations, take the Bowling Team.

These Gals or Guys walk into a climate controlled building, put on specialized shoes, throw a custom built piece of sports equipment down a wooden ally, and possibly drink a few beers.

Now, as a group ...

Are they learning 'survival' skills? They're exercising, but ... Are the other group members willing to spend $1,8000 to buy a year's supply of food for a family of four?

How about a group from work?

Are they willing to purchase a year's supply of food for their family? Have you spent time with them? Have your partners met? What does your partner think of your work 'buddy?'

Lastly, are you willing to let someone else determine the fate of you and your family?

Don't get me wrong. A short-term event; such as an earthquake, hurricane, and other short-term technical or natural event; isn't going to require such thought because the disaster is short. (Hey, my brothers and I can get along, without fighting, for five days.) but, ...

Some of those longer term events are going to require careful planning.

Sunscreen
During some events, you and your family are going to be outside, a lot.

So, ... you're going to have to protect yourselves, by using ...

Long Shirts and Pants
I do a lot of traveling in a motorized vehicle, most of the time, during the day. The sun blazes down into the car. If I not careful, I'll get a sunburn, even in the winter.

So, I wear long sleeve shirts and long pants, always, when I'm driving a long distance.

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,

The Internet
I have bought several rifles over the internet. It has gotten easier, as retailers have embraced the internet. Plus, you have a better idea about prices.

Baggage Being Loaded

Hypothetical
My family and I have never conducted an actual emergency evacuation, so everything I say about the subject is ... hypothetical.

With that said, we (you and your family) can learn some good lessons from the travel industry, such as ...

Lying
Yes, your mother taught you not to lie because ... It's lying ; - )

But, ... One, two, or five lies might save you from certain difficulties

About.com: Travel - 5 Lies to Tell When Traveling
http://studenttravel.about.com/od/planyourtrip/fl/5-Lies-to-Tell-When-Traveling.htm

The Professionals
We don't know the future, so some families may have to leave their home countries on an airplane that may just have flight attendants.

So, ... Treat them nice

Not Needed
Like any other activity, including prepping, you don't need certain things.

That's right, ... You don't need M.R.E.s, WaterBricks, Freeze-dried food, and ...

Just for Fun
If you're planning to leave the country, any country, you and your family are going to need passports.

Sooner than later, so start the process now.

Welcome Preppers and Survivalists,

Ezytrail

The Basics
Some families, like my brother Scout, will upgrade their emergency shelter, from a blue tarp and some cordage, to a fold down (pop up) camper.

Well, ... New ones are expensive and used ones, to put it nicely, can be problematic, but there is a compromise, especially families that only own a car.

Handy People
Of course, there are some folks that are going to build their own trailer, using the Ezytrail as a possible example, especially because it's built in Austrialia : - (

Upgrade
Some folks are going to say, 'Screw building my own' while their family says, 'A nicer trailer, please.'

So, ... Here's a link to describing Airstream's new fiberglass trailer.

Building Wealth
Living paycheck to paycheck, like I do, is a one-way ticket to financial disaster.

So, ... You and your family need to ...

What to Buy?
Building wealth is easy to do.

But, ... What do you purchase?

Buying Gold
Needless to say, during perceived troubling times, folks are going to flock to silver and gold.

So, ... Here's another take on purchasing gold from the British Royal Mint

I suggest avoiding silver and gold bars because I don't know how to tell 'if' they are 'real.'

Do you?
