The 'Scout' Rifle
Sad to say, some of us live in restrictive areas of the country (that needs to change), so you and family may not be able to legally own a semiautomatic rifle, such as the SKS.

But, ... There are alternatives, like lever-action carbines or bolt-action rifles, such as the Scout Rifle.

Off the Shelf
Some folks, like me, aren't going to take the time to build certain things, like ... a Scout Rifle, for several reasons.

First, I have access to semiautomatic weapons, like the SKS rifle.

Second, I'm really not interested in the Scout Rifle concept. O.K. Maybe a little ; - )

Third, at $1300, that's way out of my family's budget for protection.

Lastly, there is that whole thing, in my mind, that semiautos are 'better' than bolt-actions ; - )

Optics
Scopes have improved over the last few decades. They have become more rugged, less expensive, and achieved a certain quality acceptable to preppers.

Needless to say, they can be very expensive.
