First
You and everyone in your family needs a defensive weapon, a handgun, such as a .357 magnum revolver.
Why?
More likely than not, you and your partner are going to need to go to work, grocery shopping, or complete some other critical task during an event.
An event that, "If" you're carrying a offensive weapon, like a rifle, will make you stand out, in a bad way.
So, ... Having a concealable firearm, whether it is a .22LR revolver, 9mm pistol (Glock, Smith & Wesson, Springfield Armory, Ruger, and etc.), 1911A1 .45 ACP pistol, or some other handgun, would allow you to blend in and still be armed.
Second
You and your family need an offensives weapon, a semiautomatic rifle, such as a SKS Rifle, for everyone in the family.
Why?
A rifle allows you to defeat most concealable body armour, so villains attacking your home would have to be very organized and well equipped. Plus, the duty of all citizens is to protect the country from enemies.
Third
Your family needs one .22 rifle or a pellet gun for every two people in your family. It doesn't matter if it's a semiautomatic rifle, like the Ruger 10/22, Marlin Model 60, or some other make and model, or if it is a bolt-action .22 rifle or a pellet rifle, such as Winchester, Mossberg, Marlin, CZ-USA, or other .22 bolt-action rifle.
This rifle is used to hunt small game, squirrels, pigeons, and other such animals. It can also be used by very young children as a defensive rifle "If" your family is ever attacked.
Trust me, getting shoot with a .22LR five or six times is unpleasant. Just think what it would feel like getting shot in the balls or the face. Ouch.
Fourth
You and your family need a hunting rifle (preferably two) something in .223, .308, .30-06, or 8mm Mauser. It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive.
Next, this rifle will serve double-duty. It's a hunting rifle, for hunting animals, and a sniper rifle, for hunting humans.
Needless to say, don't tell your spouse that you're buying the rifle to 'hunt' people. This is a 'Just in Case' situation. Plus, most police 'sniper' shooting are around 50 yards (46 meters) or 150 feet. Something most people can easily do with a little training.
Fifth
You need magazines and spare parts. Let me explain.
Many years ago, the great Mel Tappen, an early survival writer, suggested to purchase two rifles. The first rifle was to shoot. The second was for spare parts. Dumb idea.
Think about it.
Someone in your family loses their firing pin retaining pin, a $1.99 part, after they disassemble their Bushmaster M4A3 Patrolman's Carbine. Do you reach for the $700 rifle, or do you reach for the spare parts box?
Yeah, the spare parts box ; - )
Next are those pesty magazines.
You need 10 to 20 of them for your defensive rifle, like the M4A3/AR-15, AK-47/AK-74, HK-91/PTR-91, or other military-style rifle.
Not the SKS though. It uses a fixed magazine. You will need stripper clips, though.
Now, about that "It can also be used by very young children as a defensive rifle ..." from a previous paragraph.
Ruger's 10/22 rifle has a detachable 10 round magazine. It sits flush with the bottom of the rifle.
Well, ... Several companies have 25 round magazines. Doubling the amount of ammunition in one single magazine changes. Buy a few of them "If" you're thinking of this whole having young children be responsible for helping to defend the family.

Bushmaster Aluminum Phosphate Magazines
Ruger 10/22 BX-25 Magazine
Sixth
All the while, you and your family are building up your ammunition supplies.
Why?
'Cause the first thing that always happens, during an event, everybody runs to the grocery store and the gun stores, buying food and ammo.
For the SKS rifle, I like Silver Bear Ammo. It's coated with zinc instead of the laquer or polymer (plastic) found on Tula, Brown Bear, and Wolf ammunition.
Silver Bear, 500 Rounds
Needless to say, you're on a budget, so any of the 7.62X39 will work in the SKS rifle or AK-47 style rifles.
For you folks carrying an AR-15 style rifle, any of these would be fine. Just make sure you test the rifle/ammunition combination.
PMC XM-193 Ammunition
Federal XM-193 Ammuniton
Winchester M-193 Ammunition
How much ammunition do you need?
At first, 100 rounds per handgun and 500 rounds per rifle with about 100 rounds of .22LR.
Of course, .22LR ammunition is still crazy expensive that's what makes the pellet rifle so attractive. For the same amount of money, you can purchase 500 or 1000 pellets for the same price or less.
Seventh
Your family needs supplies.
You need a cleaning kit, a sling (trust me, carrying a rifle all day long, with no sling is physically taxing unless you have practiced, lots of practice), and ...
5W-30 engine oil, non-chlorinated brake cleaner, and white lithium grease
And, ...
Underwear
Got to Go
Sorry folks, it's 9:37 in the PM, time for me to go to bed.
