One of my long, long, long time ago 'work-friends' was a former police officer. He saw some crazy shit, in the line of duty. One time, he went to a call for a murder, but the guy wasn't dead; even though, he had a hatchet buried in his skull. Dude was lucky; he survived that fight.

If you didn't know it, some potential villains are arming up for a fight. This fight includes killing you and your family because you believe in the Rule of Law, God, Guns, and other stuff like being able to wear a baseball cap with a so-called controversial campaign slogan.

Capitalists
Like you, I don't have a lot of money for my preps, so I look for deals at the local charity stores. They seem to have everything from blankets, warm coats (recently, I found, but didn't buy, a Lands' End insulated coat, for my wife. That coat was probably $100 new! Ooooh, shoot that coat cost $179, full price), candles, cookware, and a lot of other stuff.
There is one problem! You have to go, every week.
Note: Katniss would kill me, if I brought one more warm coat into the house ; - )
Sales
Needless to say, you are probably, wisely, getting ready for an economic collapse. One way is to purchase lots and lots of the stuff you normally use when it is 'On Sale!' at the local China-Marts.

* Etc.
Calories
Lastly, I'm getting tired, and I have to go to work tomorrow, so I have to wrap this up.
You and your family need to be storing lots and lots of versatile calories. Calories from such foods a whole wheat, white rice, corn, and other grains. Throw in some beans (one pound of rice to half a pound of beans) for a complete protein. Next, you and your family add a daily multivitamin and you have enough calories and nutrients to survive a few months.
